Hall-effect sticks, Hall-effect triggers and two back paddles are the parts you normally pay a premium for. The 8BitDo Ultimate Mobile has all three and still sits with the cheaper half of this group, which is why it is the controller we recommend first to most people. Value is easy to claim and harder to show; here it is visible in the parts list.
It is a Bluetooth pad that grips phones from 100mm to 170mm, so it covers most handsets and no tablets, which makes it a phone controller in the strict sense. Pairing is a button hold rather than a dance, and the profile button stores button assignments on the controller itself, so a game with odd defaults does not mean opening an app mid-session.
The part we did not expect to care about is the absence of software. No app, no account, no sign-in; the remapping simply lives on the pad. Add metal rings around the sticks and Hall sensors underneath them, and the two things that usually retire a mobile controller, drift and a fiddly companion app, are both designed out.
The limit is the platform. This is an Android controller and there is no version of it for iOS, so iPhone owners should go straight to the G8 Galileo below. For an Android phone, it is the least fussy route to real hardware, and the only pad here that never asked us to install anything.
Pros

Our pick for Android phones: Hall-effect sticks and triggers, two back paddles, and the best hardware-per-dollar in this group.
