The feature that turns the LiveTrak L-8 from a nice mixer into a multi-host tool is the monitoring: four headphone outputs and three independent monitor mixes, so each host can hear more of themselves or the guest without re-patching. Six combo mic inputs give you room for four people on mics, a phone guest, and a stereo music source. That matters more than raw channel count when three or four people are talking over each other.
We prefer it as the default because it records 12 tracks to an SD card and to a computer over USB at the same time. That means you can capture a clean multitrack backup without opening a DAW, then edit later. The battery option is a real convenience for a field recording or a studio with outlet anxiety, and the L-8 also works as a USB interface when you want the computer in the loop.
If your panel is four people, the L-8 is the one that keeps the session moving. The PodTrak P4next is smaller and simpler, but it does not match the L-8's six preamps or three monitor mixes. The L-8 earns its extra size with capacity, and that is why it is our default for a show that expects to grow.
Pros
- Four headphone outs with three monitor mixes
- Six combo mic inputs for hosts and guests
- Records 12 tracks to SD and USB at once
- Battery or AC power
Cons
- Menu-based controls take time to learn
For a four-person show that needs everyone in headphones and a clean multitrack backup, the LiveTrak L-8 is the mixer we reach for first.
