The 5-inch screen and no-WiFi setup are the two things that make the GoodBaby SM663 our default. The parent unit is paired at the factory, so there is no account to create and no router to worry about, and the camera pans 355° and tilts 120° from the buttons on the screen. We found the picture clear enough for checking a sleeping baby's position, and the automatic infrared night vision is strong in a dark room. That combination is the reason this one sits at the top of our list.
The battery spec needs a close read. The 30-hour rating is in VOX mode, when the screen sleeps until sound wakes it; that is the mode to use if you want the longest runtime. The monitor also has a 5-inch display that is easy to read from across the room, two-way talk, lullabies, a temperature readout, and feeding alarms. We were pleasantly surprised by how much the temperature display gets used in a nursery that runs warm.
The camera needs a nearby outlet, and the system stays private and subscription-free. For a lot of parents, that is exactly the point. If you need all-night video, check the screen-on rating before you commit; if you want a bigger battery claim, the HelloBaby is the alternative. The SM663 is still the one we recommend first because it gets the basics right.
Pros
- Readable 5-inch parent screen
- Pan-tilt covers the crib
- Clear automatic night vision
- Simple factory-paired no-WiFi setup
Cons
- No phone app for remote viewing
For most nurseries, this is the no-WiFi monitor we point to: a readable 5-inch screen, useful pan-tilt coverage, and clear night vision without an app.
