Key details

- 1.5 oz
- Battery
- 10 days smartwatch
- Display
- 1.2 in. color AMOLED
- Course Library
- 43,000+ preloaded
The 1.2-inch AMOLED screen is the first thing we noticed on the Approach S44, and it earns its keep in bright sun: the color course view and hazard screen are easy to read, and front, middle and back distances sit where you expect them. Garmin preloads 43,000+ courses, so there is no download ritual before you tee off, and the watch keeps score and shows phone notifications, and yardages come from the watch itself.
What makes it our top pick is the balance. At 1.5 ounces, the S44 disappears on the wrist, and the 10-day smartwatch battery means it can live there between rounds. We found the hazard view genuinely useful for planning a layup, and the mix of touchscreen and buttons keeps common tasks close to the surface. It is not the most capable golf computer here, but it covers the shots most of us face without turning a round into a settings exercise.
The S44 also has room to grow: it works with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers, sold separately, and the Garmin Golf app handles score uploads and handicap calculation when you pair a phone. We did not need those extras to enjoy the watch, but they keep it from feeling like a dead end after the first season.
Pros
- Bright 1.2-inch color AMOLED display
- 43,000+ preloaded courses with hazard view
- Light 1.5-ounce build and 50 m water resistance
- 10 days of smartwatch battery
Cons
No notable drawbacks to flag.
We recommend the Approach S44 to most golfers because it pairs a bright AMOLED course view and reliable distances with all-day comfort, smartwatch basics and room to add club tracking later.
