Most rangefinders on this list will hand you a number and leave the geometry to you. The RX-1400i's selectable bow mode does the math and then goes a step further: Flightpath overlays your arrow's path, so you can see roughly how high the shaft will be along its arc and whether that branch in the middle is actually in the way.
That combination is why we hand it to bowhunters first. The other half of the argument is the display — a red TOLED with low, medium and high brightness settings, which stays legible while the unlit screens on cheaper units have already gone gray. At 5.1 ounces with 5x magnification it's steady in one hand, and 5x is the magnification we prefer for close cover: enough to find a gap between trunks, not so much that the view swims.
Leupold quotes two range numbers and the difference is worth understanding. Reflective targets read to 1,400 yards, trees to 1,200, and game shorter still. You won't approach any of those with a bow, but the tree figure is the useful one — it tells you the unit will pick up the far edge of a clearing when you're checking lanes in September. The aluminum body is sealed against weather, and TBR/W adds a wind-adjusted ballistic range for rifle work.
Two things to weigh. Leupold's unconditional lifetime guarantee covers its riflescopes, binoculars and spotting scopes, with electronics handled under separate terms, so read that page rather than assuming this one is covered the way a Vortex is. And the rifle software is money a bow-only hunter never gets back. Neither changes our recommendation: the bow mode and the display are what you're paying for, and both earn it.
Pros
- Bow mode with angle-compensated ranging
- Flightpath shows potential arrow obstructions
- Dimmable red TOLED readable at last light
- 5.1 oz and steady at 5x
Cons
- TBR/W rifle software adds cost bowhunters won't use
For a bowhunter still in the timber at last light, this is the one we recommend: a real bow mode with arrow flightpath, a dimmable red display, and 5.1 ounces on the harness.
