WD Blue 1TB Mobile Hard Drive
Key details
- Capacity
- 1 TB
- Drive Height
- 7mm
- Rotation Speed
- 5400 RPM
- Interface, Cache
- SATA 6 Gb/s, 128 MB
Two numbers separate this drive from the rest of the group: 7mm and 128MB. The first is its height, and it is the reason we put it at the top. Slim laptops have bays that will not take the 9.5mm Toshiba at all, while this 7mm body is also listed as fitting most standard 9.5mm bays. A drive that fits both is the safer purchase when you have not had the machine open yet.
Cache is the number most shoppers skip, and this drive carries the most of it here. The 128MB sits on a SATA 6 Gb/s link, where the Toshiba makes do with 8MB and an older SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface. That does not turn a 5400 RPM platter into an SSD, and nothing in this group does, so if you are coming from flash storage expect a step backwards on speed and a large step up in space.
The free Acronis True Image WD Edition download matters more than it sounds. Put the old drive in a USB enclosure, clone your existing Windows install across, and you boot into the same desktop rather than rebuilding it from scratch. Do that before the swap and keep the original on a shelf. Reliability and longevity are not the same thing, and it is the second where this drive's record is thinner, which is exactly why the clone earns its shelf space.
Pros
- Fits 7mm bays and most 9.5mm bays
- 128MB cache, the largest of these drives
- Free Acronis cloning software included
- Quiet enough to forget it is spinning
Cons
- Priciest per gigabyte of the drives here
The drive we choose for a thin laptop: 7mm of height gets it into bays the 9.5mm Toshiba cannot reach, and WD's cloning software saves you rebuilding Windows.
