A cage kit earns its keep when it removes the next shopping trip, and the NEEWER VS107 arrives as a complete handheld rig: a cage, a silicone-topped top handle, two contoured grips, two 15 mm rods, and an Arca-type base. That is a lot of hardware in one box. The frame is aluminum, the grips are shaped for a two-handed hold, and the top handle gives you a place to grab for low angles.
That completeness is why we recommend the VS107 first for shooters working with a mix of DSLR and mirrorless bodies. You get the base, the handle, and the grips without buying each separately, and the 15 mm rods give a follow focus or matte box somewhere to live. The 15 kg maximum weight recommendation leaves room for a camera and a sensible accessory load, and the Arca base moves between a compatible tripod and gimbal without a separate plate.
The universal cradle is the part to think through. It is listed for a long run of Canon, Sony, Nikon, and Fujifilm bodies, but universal means you should check that the camera sits flat, the lens release stays clear, and a battery grip does not crowd the side plates. A dedicated cage will hug a compact body more closely. We accept that trade for the flexibility.
The 1.14 kg weight is the other honest cost, and it is the reason this is not our first choice for a stripped-down gimbal build or a long hike. The grips make the mass useful when you are shooting handheld; the same mass is just baggage when the rig stays on a tripod. If you mainly need protection and an Arca plate, a lighter cage-only design is the smarter purchase.
Pros
- Complete cage, top handle, grips, and rods
- Arca base with 15 mm rod support
- Many threaded, cold-shoe, and ARRI mounts
- 15 kg maximum load recommendation
Cons
- More parts to assemble than a bare cage
The VS107 is the one we hand to a mixed-camera shooter who wants a complete handheld rig without piecing one together.
