Forty-four to 80 inches and 20 to 90 pounds is the range most living-room TVs fall into, and the MM340 handles it with less fuss than anything else in this group. The screen travels 27 inches down on gas pistons, straightens itself on the way back up, and stops where you set the adjustable stops. Once it's down it swivels 30 degrees either way. Nothing about using it feels like the cheap option here.
The first pull will surprise you. The pistons ship at their stiffest, and a 65-inch set takes real weight to get moving until you back the tension screw off, after which one hand is enough. What the MM340 won't do is tilt, so glare from a low sofa has to be solved by where you hang the screen rather than by the screen itself. The MM700 is the one here that tilts properly.
Two measurements decide whether it fits your room: how far the mantel projects past the wall, where 18 inches is the maximum this frame clears, and how far apart the studs sit, since the arms reach 24 inches. Get both right and you have a UL listed mount with a limited lifetime warranty and cable management tucked behind the arm. Get the mantel wrong and the TV comes down onto the shelf instead of past it.
Pros
- 27 inches of vertical travel on gas pistons
- Covers 44- to 80-inch TVs up to 90 lbs
- UL listed with a limited lifetime warranty
- Adjustable stops and self-straightening on the way up
Cons
- Swivels but doesn't tilt
- Won't clear a mantel deeper than 18 inches
For most living rooms with a TV over the fireplace, this is the mount we point to: 27 inches of drop, a 30-degree swivel, and the lowest price of anything here.
